The Thomas J. Shryock Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons have initiated a program in concert with a local school to incentivize the development of reading as a lifelong skill in elementary school students (grades 1-4). This incentive will take the form of a drawing to give away four new bicycles at the end of the school year. The more a student reads, the better their chance to win. Currently this program is only being offered at Lexington Park Elementary but if corporate and community sponsorship grows to support it, this program is envisioned to eventually encompass all St. Mary’s County Public Schools. The first year of this exciting program was made possible by generous contributions from the following sponsors.
Pax Velo Cycling Club
Holmes Tucker International Inc.
Patuxent Adventure Center
Books for Bikes will utilize the Independent Reading Level Assessment Framework already in place at Lexington Park Elementary, so as to not burden the excellent teachers with additional tracking requirements. Using the Independent Reading Level Assessment Framework the school will set a target for reading at school at and home for each grade level. If a student accomplishes their weekly target they will receive a Bike Ticket. For every thirty minutes they read in exceedance of the target, they will receive another bike ticket.
At the end of the year, all the bike tickets will be placed in a box and tickets will be drawn to award four new Specialized HotRock Mountain Bikes in an appropriate size for the winner and in the color of their choice from the Patuxent Adventure Center on Solomon’s Island. These bikes will come with appropriate size helmets and Patuxent Adventure Center’s excellent full purchase price repair service package. Only one bike will be awarded to a child, in the event that a child’s name is drawn twice; another drawing with be performed until four children have been chosen. The date and time of the bicycle drawing will be chosen by Dr. Curtis Alston, the principal of Lexington Park Elementary. The incredible staff at Patuxent Adventure Center will size each winner to determine the appropriate size bike and then both order and assemble it after the child has chosen their choice of available colors.

On May 9th Mr. Colin Boynton of the Thomas J. Shryock Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Hollywood MD, along with Dr. Curtis Alston, the principal of Lexington Park Elementary presented two students with vouchers for new bicycles from the Patuxent Adventure Center. Nicholas Osborne and Jurnee Milburn were selected in the first and second grade drawing to win these bicycles as part of the Books for Bikes program, a pilot program the Lodge is hoping to expand to additional schools next year. The drawing for third and fourth grades will occur at 9:00am on the 12th of May. Books for Bikes encourages recreational reading by elementary school students through the incentive of increased reading correspondingly increasing the individual student's odds of winning a new bike at the end of the year. This program was sponsored and funded by generous contributions of the Pax Velo Cycling Club, Holmes-Tucker International Incorporated, the Patuxent Adventure Center, Avian LLC and the Lodge.
